When Natalie McIvor was left cold after attending her first business networking event she realised she needed to start her own.

At the time, Natalie had just returned to the Sunshine Coast from operating a successful day spa business in Vanuatu. She had been keen to re-establish connections within the community but walked away that day without any.

“Three years ago, the concept of networking was foreign to me. I had no idea why you went to networking events, what you did there or what to expect,” she said.

“I thought networking would be about connecting with people, finding out more about each other, yet at this event, I didn’t feel I knew anyone else beyond their business card and their marital woes, and they sure didn’t seem interested in me.”

It turns out Natalie wasn’t alone in her fear of networking. When she voiced her idea about starting a networking group for like-minded Sunshine Coast women, the positive response was immediate.

Three years on and after 12 months of successfully hosting monthly networking goddesses@lunch events on the Coast, Natalie is set to take her networking community to a global level.

“I’ve been blown away by the response,” the Coolum-based businesswoman said.

About 20 women attended Natalie’s first Enlightened Goddesses lunch in February 2010. Since that time more than 140 women have attended an Enlightened Goddesses event.

These women represent a diverse business base, from natural therapists, to interior designers, mediums, clairvoyants, beauty therapists, financial advisors, life coaches, mentors, public relations consultants, graphic designers, doctors, hairdressers, accountants, web developers, counsellors, authors and property investors.

At each event, every attendee gets to deliver a three-minute “elevator-pitch” about their business, display material on the promotional table and be inspired by a guest speaker.

Speakers in 2010 included The Art of Public Speaking’s Carren Smith, international nutritional expert Cyndi O’Meara and Like Chocolate for Women authors, Kim Morrison and Fleur Whelligan.

In 2011 The Enlightened Goddesses Business Network, will grow to include greater member benefits, more networking functions and signature events. The Network will start the year off with a major event on February 23rd, “Goddesses NetConnect Seminar” showcasing and promoting the Network and it’s members.

The increased demand for Enlightened Goddesses events beyond the Sunshine Coast has enabled Natalie to create a franchise model, so events can be held anywhere in the world under the Enlightened Goddesses banner.

An online networking presence is the centrepiece of this. Enlightened Goddesses members will be able to network online with other members for further business connections and discussion.

“Our aim is to build and develop relationships between members. Our vision is to create a forum where women in business can grow their skills and make connections that lead to more clients, business idea creation and growth and speaking roles,” said Natalie.
